Book Recommendation: Content Rules by C.C. Chapman and Ann Handley

Here we are.  The third and final book review in this series.  Here’s a quick recap for those of you just tuning in.  The first book, Marketing Outrageously by Jon Spoelstra, teaches you to think differently in order to greatly increase your revenue. The second book, Attention! This Book Will Make You Money by Jim Kukral, gives you the steps and tools to bring attention to your company...again, to make you more money.  So, you’ve followed the steps in those two books. You’ve got some great new ideas and you’re bringing attention to your business.  People are interested, but how do you keep them engaged so that they’ll come back?  You create compelling content! C.C. Chapman and Ann Handley wrote Content Rules to help you do just that.

The majority of their book is broken up into 3 parts: their actual content rules, the how-to section and success stories. The first part, the Content Rules, goes through their rules for creating the content. These chapters go into detail about each of their rules and give you tips and pointers in how to create your content consistently. More than just putting “stuff” out there that people might find interesting, they show you how focus on your brand and audience to create relevant. They also go over what tone to use, how to reimagine current content and how to grow your stories.

The second part of the book teaches you to use the rules from part one to create specific vehicles for your content.  They show you how to create blogs, podcasts, videos, ebooks, webinars, white papers and more.  Each have a specific use and tone that need to be followed for your audience to get the most benefit.

Finally, Part 3 gives you examples of companies that are creating excellent content and how they are doing it.  Companies that are used include the U.S. Army, Kodak and Hubspot, just to name a few.

If you ever have the chance to hear these two speak (together or separate), take advantage of it.  In fact, there’s a webinar this Tuesday (July 31) in which they are presenting for Social Media Today. You can get more information and sign up at http://goo.gl/nI2FZ.  I’ll be listening in for sure!

Well, that’s my take on three great books.  There are others out there by some great authors.  I’d love to hear what you are reading that’s inspiring you.  I’m always looking for new books, so please share with all of us!  Thanks!
