Music Review: New Aerosmith Song - Legendary Child

I am one of the biggest Aerosmith fans you'll find.  I've seen them countless times in concert.  I can play most of their songs on guitar.  Hell, I even like a lot of their later songs and CD's!  Don't get me wrong though. Their stuff from the '70's is just incredible and blows away anything they've done since getting back together in the '80's. So, with rumors that they were looking to return to their older sound with this new album (that's been in the works for yeeeaarrrrssss) and with bringing back Jack Douglas to produce it, I'm very excited to hear the finished product. However, my fear is that with Steven Tyler and his stint on American Idol (embarrassing to true longtime fans of the band), the music will end up sounding more like crap you'd hear on AI than actual Aerosmith (see Steven Tyler's horrible solo single, "Feels So Good").

So, when I saw that Aerosmith debuted their new song, "Legendary Child", on American Idol (more on that later), I quickly downloaded the studio version. I really went in with mixed expectations...and that's basically what I got from the song. It's mostly newer Aerosmith with a slight nod to their older style. The intro is very flowery, followed by a strong riff that is a complete rip-off of the main riff of Led Zeppelin's "The Wanton Song". During the chorus and verse, the vocals almost completely cover up the riff.  The lyrics are your standard Steven Tyler lyrics (even stealing his own lyrics from Walk This Way). I mean that in a good way. The chorus, while overproduced, is catchy.  Overall, the song reminds me of a cross between "The Wanton Song", "Eat The Rich" and "What Kind of Love Are You On" (off the Armageddon soundtrack). So, not a whole lot of "old" Aerosmith is there.

So, what does that mean? Do I like it or not? Well, I still remember when I first heard "Livin' On The Edge" on the radio. I was blown away and my first thought was that it would be an absolute Aerosmith classic. Some will argue if I was right, but it's still one of my favorite songs from the "new" Aerosmith era. I didn't get any thoughts or feelings like that from "Legendary Child". The best I can say is that it's an ok song and it's growing on me a little bit. I'm hoping it will be like Van Halen's "Tattoo". That song is the worst on their new CD and really made me think the whole thing was going to be awful. I was very surprised at how good it turned out to be. I'm hoping it's the same thing here.  I'm hoping this is the worst song on their new CD and everything else just blows me away.  Time will tell...Music From Another Dimension comes out in September.

Now, I've seen quite a few good comments about the song and how it's like their "old" stuff. So, I decided to check out the performance on American Idol (it was rough...I hate that show) to see it sounded any heavier live. It didn' fact, parts of it were kind of a mess, but that could just be the quality of the video I was watching. The background vocals, which is the main chorus, were clearly taped while Steven Tyler sang over them. I'm hoping that was just for TV and won't be the case when they're on tour (in Cleveland on June 19). I'll be there and that's one of my biggest concert pet peeves...anything taped).

Anyway, that's probably too much rambling, but as you can probably tell, I'm pretty passionate about music and especially Aerosmith.  I'm curious to hear all of your comments. Do you like the song? Do you think it's reminiscent of "older" Aerosmith?  Tell me.  As always, thanks for reading!
